South Africa mourns the loss of legendary actor Don Mlangeni Nawa

South Africa is in mourning following the passing of veteran actor Don Mlangeni Nawa, who died on April 16, 2025, at the age of 65. His family confirmed his death in a heartfelt statement, describing him as “the heart of our family, a loving father, brother, and friend .

Born on June 7, 1959, in Boksburg, Nawa’s illustrious career spanned over three decades, beginning in theatre before transitioning to television in 1989 with a lead role in the Zulu mini-series Ubambo Lwami. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Laqhasha in the sitcom ‘Sgudi ‘Snaysi, and later as Zebedee Matabane in the soap opera Isidingo, a role that earned him a SAFTA Golden Horn Award for Best Actor in a TV Soap in 2006.​

Nawa’s versatility shone through in various roles, including Prince Moseki in The Throne, Shadrack Mokobane in The Estate, and King Langa in Shaka iLembe. His final screen appearance was in the 2024 Netflix drama Soon Comes Night.​

Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment industry. Angus Gibson, executive producer of Shaka iLembe, praised Nawa’s “powerful and memorable portrayal” of King Langa, stating that he was “not only a remarkable talent but a true legend of our industry” . Multichoice also honored him as “a cultural icon, whose work reflected the richness of South African life and storytelling”.​

The cause of death has not been disclosed, though the family noted that he had been ill for several months . Details regarding memorial and funeral services will be announced in due course.​
