There’s something magical about leaving the city before dawn in search of rhythm, connection, and culture. At 4AM sharp on Friday, we hit the road from Johannesburg, bound for one of Africa’s most iconic festivals: MTN Bushfire 2025 in Eswatini. By 7:30AM, we were already at the Oshoek Border Post — and thankfully, being early meant a swift crossing into Eswatini in just under 45 minutes. From the border, a 20-minute scenic drive led us to Mbabane, where we quickly grabbed our local SIM cards for seamless connectivity throughout the weekend.
With our connectivity sorted, we drove straight to the MTN Bushfire accreditation zone, again, smooth and efficient. This level of organisation was a recurring theme throughout the weekend. Our campsite was at the serene Sondzela Game Park, just a 7-minute drive from the heart of the festivities. Nestled in nature, we pitched our tent with anticipation buzzing in the air.
Friday Night Fire: Culture, Nostalgia, and Dilemmas
MTN Bushfire 2025 kicked off with a nostalgic bang. On the Main Stage, legends like Boom Shaka, the ever-charismatic K.O and rising star Zee Nxumalo brought the heat. But over at the Corona Firefly Stage, Oscar Mbo was simultaneously owning the decks, creating a classic Bushfire dilemma: who do you choose?
This is the beauty and the challenge of MTN Bushfire: multiple stages, world-class performers and a crowd as diverse as the lineup. We saw flags flying from South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, the Netherlands, the US, the UK and Lesotho — over 55 nationalities represented, just as the festival has done for the past 18 years.
From camping to glamping to caravan setups, the entire venue was alive. Friday night also featured laid-back brilliance from Nduduzo Makhathini at the amphitheatre. Other standout acts included Eswatini’s Intsatsakusa, South Africa’s Lia Butler and more – each adding a unique flavour to the global pot that is Bushfire.
Saturday Vibes: Soul, Hip-Hop and Electric Energy
Saturday morning started early. By 10AM, festivalgoers were up and ready, dancing in the fields and soaking in the vibes. On the Main Stage, Mozambique’s 340ml transported us back to the early 2010s Braamfontein groove. The crowd went wild when Thandiswa Mazwai aka King Ta, appeared for a surprise collab.
Then came Inkabi Zezwe, the power duo of Sjava and Big Zulu. Whether you’re into hip-hop or afro-soul, this was a moment. The crowd sang every lyric like a massive, harmonious choir. Aymos closed the night with a soulful Amapiano set, taking us back to “Emcimbini” days during the pandemic.
The lineup was packed with talent: Iphupho L’ka Biko (SA), Feli Nandi (Zim), and local legends like Young Zesh & Lyrikal Busta kept the energy at peak levels. Meanwhile, the venue buzzed with food vendors dishing out tacos, burgers, chicken, sweets, and refreshing ice cream — everything your taste buds could crave.
A Festival That Feeds the Soul and Community
Beyond the music, Bushfire is a conscious celebration. The festival’s call to action, #BringYourFire, encourages positive social and environmental change. Portions of ticket sales support Eswatini’s Young Heroes (aiding HIV/AIDS orphans) and boMake Rural Projects (empowering rural women artisans). The Bring Your Fire Zone featured creative activism around gender diversity, youth empowerment and sustainability, powered by organisations like UNICEF and Greenpeace
.
This festival is more than entertainment. It’s a movement — and it shows.
Sunday Glow: Soulful Ends and New Friends
Sundays at Bushfire are special. It’s the finale, the exhale, the spiritual reset. We met James Rust, a local who’s now able to attend since finishing his studies in SA. For him, the night parties and the Corona Stage are unmissable. Yolandi from Pietermaritzburg has been attending since 2021 — her favourites this year were Zee Nxumalo and Oscar Mbo, with Mörda still to come on Sunday night.
Renee and Cheezy from Johannesburg gave the festival a glowing review: safe, well-organised and packed with friendly faces. Renee’s been coming for 7 years — for her, it’s all about the people and discovering new acts. Meanwhile, Sli, Johanna and Refuwe, camping at “Alex”, swear by Sunday’s magical atmosphere and post-show campsite parties.
Even first-timers like Grace (originally from the US, now in Mozambique) and William (Mozambique) were blown away. “We’ll definitely be back — next time, we’re doing glamping,” Grace said with a smile.
A Festival Like No Other
From puppet shows and drumming workshops to open mic storytelling for kids, MTN Bushfire is designed for all ages. The EU Bushfire Schools Festival engaged thousands of young minds through art and social messaging.
The Corona Firefly Stage featured Ms Cosmo, DJ Expo, DJ Capital, DJ Merlon, and more — a proper sonic journey.
Closing out Sunday night? None other than the legendary, five-time Grammy-winning group Ladysmith Black Mambazo — a performance that left everyone in quiet awe.
MTN Bushfire is an experience — a fusion of music, activism, community, and art, all wrapped in the rolling hills of Malkerns Valley. With over 23,000 attendees per day, it’s no surprise this festival has sold out 12 years in a row.
So if you’ve never “brought your fire” before, now’s the time to get your passport ready. Because Bushfire doesn’t just entertain — it transforms.
